Ecology and description
Oshima cicada is the most representative autumn cicada in Yambaru and is the largest species among the Japanese Meimuna. Its habitat ranges from Amami Oshima to Okinawajima, with the specific name Oshimensis referring to Amami Oshima.
By June, a few calls of Oshima cicada can be heard, with a sharp and bright “Kin! Kin! Kin!” sound. The population peaks in late August, but their calls can be heard until late November. After November, Oshima cicada rests on tree trunks near the base to lay eggs.
