Species information

Scientific name: Goniurosaurus nebulozonatus
Japanese name: ヤンバルトカゲモドキ
Chinese name: 山原瞼虎
English name: Yambaru ground gecko
Origin: Northern Okinawajima

Ecology and description

This species was identified as a new species in a 2024 report, distinguishing it from Kuroiwa’s ground gecko (G. kuroiwae). It is found in the Yambaru region of northern Okinawajima. The dorsal crossbands of this gecko are usually blurred with diffused boundaries, which is reflected in its specific name nebulozonatus: nebula (blurred) + zona (band), meaning “blurred bands.” However, Kuroiwa’s ground gecko may coexist and hybridize with this species in the Ogimi area.
