Origin: Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands
Ecology and description
The scutellate boobook that was previously recognized in Japan was identified under the scientific name Ninox scutulata. In 2002, this species was reclassified as a distinct species from Ninox scutulata. It is further divided into the following 3 subspecies:
- Ninox japonica japonica: Found in Japan and the southern Korean Peninsula
- Ninox japonica florensis: Found in northeastern and eastern China, southeastern Siberia, and the northern Korean Peninsula
- Ninox japonica totogo (Ryukyu northern boobook): Found in the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan
