Ecology and description

This species is endemic to Kumejima. Compared to Kumejima Geothelphusa freshwater Crab, which is also found on Kumejima, the Kumejima Candidiopotamon freshwater crab has many protrusions on its carapace, which makes it easy to distinguish between the two based on appearance.

The genus Candidiopotamon is found on some islands in Taiwan and the Central Ryukyus. In Okinawa Prefecture, there are 3 species:

  • Candidiopotamon kumejimense クメジマミナミサワガニ Kumejima Candidiopotamon Freshwater Crab, found on Kumejima
  • Candidiopotamon okinawense オキナワミナミサワガニ Okinawa Candidiopotamon freshwater crab, found on Okinawajima
  • Candidiopotamon tokashikense トカシキミナミサワガニ 渡嘉敷明溪蟹, found on Tokashikijima
