Okinawa Skink

Plestiodon marginatus

Japanese name: オキナワトカゲ
Chinese name: 沖繩石龍子
English name: Okinawa Skink
Origin: Okinawa Islands, Yoronjima, Okinoerabujima

The Okinawa Skink reaches a total length of about 15–19 cm and is distributed in the Okinawa Islands as well as on Yoronjima and Okinoerabujima in the Amami Islands. It mainly inhabits coastal forests and grasslands, in contrast to Barbour’s Skink (Plestiodon barbouri) in the same region, which is active in forests and mountainous areas. Juveniles have blue tails, while adults are brown in color. They are highly alert and move quickly, making them difficult to observe.
