Melanabropsis yanbarensis
Japanese name: ヤンバルクロギリス
Chinese name: 山原烏黯螽
English name: Yambaru Chevron Cricket
Origin: Okinawajima, Kumejima
The Yambaru Chevron Cricket was once thought to be endemic to Okinawajima, but its presence was also confirmed on Kumejima in recent years. It typically inhabits areas near large trees such as Castanopsis sieboldii that can form tree cavities. The presence of this species often indicates that primary forest remains in the area.
Its mandibles are extremely strong—powerful enough to crush the hard acorns. If bitten on the finger, it can even cause bleeding.
