Ecology and description
The genus Ryukyum is endemic to the Ryukyu Islands, and currently only includes the single species Yaeyama ryukyu crab. This species is designated as a rare species of wildlife in Okinawa Prefecture due to its decreasing numbers from habitat destruction and poaching. Its carapace is typically yellowish-brown, about 44 cm wide, making it the largest freshwater crab in Japan. It can be spotted relatively easily on well-preserved forestry environment, but quickly retreats to its burrow when approached.
