Ecology and description
This species is similar in appearance to the Okinawa tip-nosed frog (Odorrana ranina) found in northern Okinawajima, but it is larger, with adults reaching up to 10 cm. Its coloring can vary between brown and green. It is highly alert and will immediately jump away if it senses someone approaching. The Amami tip-nosed frog is found on both Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima, but Amami Oshima hosts the larger Otton Frog (Babina subaspera), which is absent in Tokunoshima. Consequently, the Amami tip-nosed frog on Tokunoshima tends to grow larger than those on Amami Oshima.
The breeding season on Tokunoshima spans from December to January, while on Amami Oshima, it extends from October to May. Due to its longer breeding season, the species is said to be capable of laying eggs twice.
