Amami Tip-nosed Frog

奄美臭蛙

Odorrana amamiensis

Japanese Name: アマミハナサキガエル
Chinese Name: 奄美臭蛙、奄美鼻先蛙、奄美尖鼻蛙
English Name: Amami Tip-nosed Frog
Origin: Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima

This species closely resembles the Okinawa Tip-nosed Frog (Odorrana ranina), found in northern Okinawa, but is larger in size. Adult frogs can grow up to 10 cm, and they exhibit color variations ranging from brown to green. They are highly alert and will quickly leap away if approached. While both Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima have populations of the Amami Tip-nosed Frog, Tokunoshima frogs tend to grow larger, as there are no larger competing species like the Otton Frog (Babina subaspera) found on Amami Oshima.

The breeding season on Tokunoshima is from December to January, while on Amami Oshima, it spans from October to May, allowing the frogs to potentially breed twice within the season.
