Ecology and description
The Amami coral snake is a small venomous snake of the family Elapidae (cobra family), with a body length of approximately 30-60 cm. It is rare and difficult to observe. Although there are many similar species on Tokunoshima and Amami, this subspecies is only found on Amami Oshima and surrounding islets. The coral snake on Tokunoshima is the Okinawan subspecies (S. japonicus boettgeri).
