Buergeria japonica
Japanese Name: リュウキュウカジカガエル
Chinese Name: 日本溪樹蛙、日本樹蛙
English Name: Ryukyu Stream Treefrog
Origin: Tokara Islands, Okinawa Islands, Amami Islands
The Ryukyu Stream Treefrog is not found in Honshu, Japan, but is distributed across the Ryukyu Islands, south of Kuchi-no-shima in the Tokara Islands (excluding the Miyako Islands, North Daito Island, and South Daito Island). A 2020 study separated the populations from the Yaeyama Islands and eastern Taiwan into a new species, Buergeria choui, while the population from western Taiwan was named Buergeria otai. This species breeds in summer and is often seen gathering on wet roads or near drains after rainy weather, making it prone to roadkill.
