Ryukyu Robin

Larvivora komadori

Japanese name: アカヒゲ
Chinese name: 琉球歌鴝
English name: Ryukyu Robin
Origin: Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Danjo Islands, Tokara Islands (resident or summer visitor)

The Ryukyu Robin is distributed across the Ryukyu Islands north of Tokunoshima. In winter, it sometimes migrates southward to overwinter and has been recorded in Okinawajima, Yonagunijima, Taiwan, and even Hong Kong. The population that resides in the northern part of Okinawajima is now considered a distinct species, the Okinawa Robin (Larvivora namiyei). Males of the Ryukyu Robin are black from the face to the chest and have a black patch on the lower wing, which the Okinawa Robin lacks—this is a key feature for distinguishing the two species.
