Odorrana narina
Japanese name: ハナサキガエル
Chinese name: 琉球臭蛙、沖繩臭蛙、沖繩鼻先蛙、沖繩尖吻蛙、琉球尖鼻蛙
English name: Okinawa tip-nosed frog
Origin: Northern Okinawajima (endemic)
This species is commonly found in the forested areas of Okinawa and resembles the Swinhoe’s frog (Odorrana swinhoana) found in Taiwan. However, it is slightly larger, has a higher-pitched call, and shows a wide range of coloration from green to brown. The Japanese name refers to its pointed snout.
Breeding occurs in winter, and in spring, newly metamorphosed juveniles can often be seen.

Frogs of this genus have evolved into different species on various islands in the Ryukyu Islands. In addition to the distinctly colored Okinawa ishikawa frog and Amami ishikawa frog, the following species are known:
- Odorrana amamiensis – Found on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima
- Odorrana narina – Found in northern Okinawajima
- Odorrana supranarina – Found on Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima
- Odorrana utsunomiyaorum – Found on Ishigakijima and Iriomotejima
Note: The species name utsunomiyaorum honors amphibian researchers Dr. Yasuaki Utsunomiya and his wife Taeko.(Reference)
