Okinawa Robin

Larvivora namiyei

Japanese name: ホントウアカヒゲ
Chinese name: 沖繩歌鴝
English name: Okinawa Robin
Origin: Northern Okinawajima

The Okinawa Robin is an endemic species restricted to the Yambaru region in northern Okinawajima. Males have black feathers from the face to the chest, while females have gray feathers in the same area. They live in the forest understory and feed on small animals such as earthworms found on the ground. They are sometimes seen foraging on soil overturned by the Ryukyu wild boar.

A key difference between the Okinawa Robin (Larvivora namiyei) and the Ryukyu Robin (Larvivora komadori) is that the latter has black feathers on the sides of the belly, which the Okinawa Robin lacks.
