Origin: Miyako Islands, Yaeyama Islands

The species Lycodon rufozonatus is divided into two subspecies:

  • Lycodon rufozonatus rufozonatus: The nominotypical subspecies, distributed in Korea, Taiwan, eastern to southern China, North Korea, northern Vietnam, Laos, and the southern part of the Russian Far East. In Japan, it is found in the Senkaku Islands and Tsushima.
  • Lycodon rufozonatus walli: The walli subspecies tends to have a more yellowish pattern compared to the nominotypical subspecies. The population on Miyakojima is especially distinctive in coloration and is considered extremely rare.
