Odorrana supranarina
Japanese Name: オオハナサキガエル
Chinese Name: 大臭蛙、八重山臭蛙
English Name: Greater tip-nosed frog
Origin: Endemic to Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands
The Greater Tip-nosed Frog (Odorrana supranarina) is a species endemic to Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands. Its species name, supranarina, refers to its larger size compared to the Okinawan Tip-nosed Frog (Odorrana narina). Males reach a body length of about 6-7 cm, while females are larger at around 8-12 cm. Juvenile Greater Tip-nosed Frogs can be challenging to distinguish from the Utsunomiya’s Tip-nosed Frog (Odorrana utsunomiyaorum), which shares its range on Ishigaki and Iriomote. However, the Greater Tip-nosed Frog has a more pointed snout and a smoother back with less pronounced dorsal ridges.
