The Yaeyama Crested Serpent Eagle (Spilornis cheela perplexus) is a subspecies of the crested serpent eagle, with a limited distribution on Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands. It is a rare species, with a combined population of fewer than 200 individuals across both islands, and is designated as a Natural Monument of Japan. Approximately five individuals are killed each year in traffic accidents.
