Ryukyum yaeyamense
Japanese name: ヤエヤマヤマガニ
Chinese name: 八重山琉球蟹
English name: Yaeyama Ryukyu Crab
Origin: Found on Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island, and Kohama Island
The genus Ryukyum is endemic to the Ryukyu Islands and currently includes only the Yaeyama Ryukyu Crab. This species is designated as a rare wild species in Okinawa Prefecture, with numbers decreasing due to habitat destruction and poaching. The carapace is typically yellow-brown and about 44 cm wide, making it the largest freshwater crab in Japan. It is commonly seen along well-preserved forest roads but quickly retreats into its burrow when approached.
