Barbour’s Eyelid Skink

Plestiodon barbouri

Japanese name: バーバートカゲ
Chinese name: 巴氏石龍子
English name: Barbour’s Eyelid Skink
Origin: Okinawa Islands, Amami Islands

The Barbour’s Eyelid Skink is a medium-sized lizard found in the Okinawa and Amami Islands. Its specific name honors American herpetologist Thomas Barbour. Juveniles are dark brown with five golden longitudinal stripes along the sides of the body, and their tails are bluish. Some adults retain this coloration. This species mainly inhabits mountainous areas, whereas the Ryukyu Skink (Plestiodon marginatus) of the Okinawa Islands and the Oshima Skink (Plestiodon oshimensis) of the Amami Islands are more often found in coastal or lowland areas.
