Yanbaru Discovery Forest Night Observation

If you want to observe the Okinawa Sword-tail Newt and Okinawa Tree Frog, winter (December-March) at Yanbaru Discovery Forest is the best time. There’s also a chance to see snakes that prey on frogs, and if you’re lucky, you might spot the Okinawa Rail resting in trees or the Hallowell’s Tree Frog in March-April. Even if you’re not staying at the facility, you can still join the observation activity.

The 2-hour tour will visit either the Wild Boar Trail or the Stream Trail depending on the situation. The 3.5-hour tour can cover both trails, or visit one trail and then drive to nearby locations to search for the Okinawa Rail.

Notes

  • Our company has a special agreement with Yanbaru Discovery Forest for entry outside regular operating hours. Unauthorized access to the facility’s trails outside of the scheduled tour is not permitted.
  • The tour fee includes the facility usage fee for Yanbaru Discovery Forest.
  • I do not recommend booking the night observation directly with Yanbaru Discovery Forest, as their tour is only 1.5 hours long and may not have a English-speaking guide.
  • If you need to borrow a flashlight or rain boots, please contact in advance and provide your shoe size (cm).
  • In case of rain, if the precipitation is below 3mm, the activity will continue as rain makes it easier to observe amphibians and reptiles. Activities will be canceled in case of typhoons or heavy rain. Please bring rain gear.
  • We cannot guarantee sightings of specific species.
